This week, our lecturer, Prof. Dr. Suhaimi bin Mhd. Sarif, unable to held face to face classes with us. However, to replace the face to face classes, our lecturer held an online classes using Zoom meetings. The topic discussed among us this week is related to "challenges to sustainable development". There is a lot that our lecturer have explained about it. Therefore, I would like to share and explain the results of our discussion this week. Hopefully it is useful!
Sustainable development faces a variety of challenges, whether social, economic or environmental. In terms of social, inequality and a lack of education are common problems. Inequality, whether economic, gender or related to access to resources, remains a major obstacle to sustainability. For example, marginalized communities in developing countries often lack access to basic needs such as clean water supply, education and healthcare. Because of this matter, it can undermine efforts to achieve sustainable development.
Secondly, in addition to the social, the economic aspect also has its own challenges in driving towards sustainable development today. One of the most significant concerns is the unequal distribution of wealth and resources. This can limit the ability of developing countries to invest in sustainable practices. It's not only affecting developing countries, but it can also affect low income countries. As well known, low income countries rely heavily on international help. If this matter continues, these countries will lack the finances to invest in renewable energy, infrastructure development and sustainable industries. To overcome this problem, it is important to foster international collaboration and fair trading practices. Wealthier countries or international organizations can provide financial aid or technology transfer to low income countries.
Lastly, environmental challenges. Among the challenges is climate change, driven by greenhouse gas emissions from industry, transportation and deforestation, which could lead to rising global temperatures and more frequent natural disasters. Besides climate change, biodiversity loss also is another challenge to sustainability. With the world's population growing and economies rising nowadays, our ecosystems are being degraded due to urbanization, pollution and unsustainable agricultural practices. If this continues and no action is taken, it might endanger numerous species and the ecosystem services they provide. Plus, the efforts towards sustainable development will become more complicated and may not be realized.
